Recap: June 18, 2016 at Blatchford Tower

Our second event of the season took place on Saturday, June 18 at Blatchford Tower and once again we were greeted by warm, sunny, beautiful weather!

What the Truck?! at Blatchford

From 4-8pm, hundreds of Edmontonians stopped by the event to enjoy tasty eats from 10 food trucks as well to learn more about Blatchford, a new neighbourhood being developed by the City of Edmonton on the former City Centre Airport lands. It might not look like much now, but in a few years the area will be completely transformed into a vibrant, mixed-used urban community.

The Blatchford folks had a couple of giveaways for guests, including some awesome reusable utensils, perfect for digging into the diverse menu that was available. Blue Giraffe Creamery made their WTT debut with a range of ice cream flavours. Calle Mexico was popular all night long offering Pozole, Barbacoa Tacos, and traditional sopes. Canicus, always a favorite of the kids with the bright red fire truck, delivered solid pizza as usual. Cookie Love helped guests beat the heat with ice cream sandwich combinations like salted caramel and chocolate chip cookie. The Good Stuff returned with a popular pork belly bao and custom grind Alberta lamb burger. Irie Foods Xpress made their WTT debut with a popular jerk chicken poutine. Nearly everyone left the event with a bag of mini donuts from Jackie O’s. I made sure to enjoy the Quebecois poutine from La Poutine while many others enjoyed the chicken satay sub from Nhon Hoa. And last but not least, Northlands’ 1879 truck offered Lamb Merguez and local fried carrots.

We were very happy to welcome back Edmonton’s Food Bank to our event (they’ll be at every What the Truck?! event this season). This time we encouraged guests to make a donation in order to go up inside the old City Centre Airport control tower. It’s a historic building that will be preserved and incorporated into the new development, and guests who went up the 100+ steps to the top were greeted with a unique view of Edmonton’s skyline. In total we raised 73 kilograms of food and $1,008 for the Food Bank, which works out to over 3,000 meals! Way to go Edmonton!

Big thanks to the entire Blatchford team as well as the Kingsway District Association for all the effort and support that went into making this event happen. It’s so great to have such strong partners to work with!

Infinite Eye Photography, one of our season sponsors, brought along their newly wrapped Motor Photo Truck – Edmonton’s first mobile photo studio! The Oiler-colored truck was a hit with guests and Infinite Eye captured some great shots for us throughout the evening.

Also a big thank you to our other sponsors – GFL Environmental Waste Management, Hendrix Restaurant Equipment and Supplies, and Eberhardt Foods.
