Recap: May 17, 2012 Truck Stop

It was another windy day, but that didn’t stop street food-loving Edmontonians on Thursday!

Three trucks ended up selling out of food, so for next week, to guarantee a sample of the dish you have your eye on, make sure to come early. See you this Thursday!

Announcing: What the Truck?! at Victoria Promenade

We’re excited to finally announce the second What the Truck?! event to take place this summer:

What: What the Truck?!, Edmonton’s food truck extravaganza
When: Friday, August 3, 2012
Where: Victoria Promenade (100 Avenue, south of Jasper and 121 Street – very limited parking, so walk, bike, or ride transit!)
Time: 5-9pm

We like to move the events around as much as possible, and in the process highlight locations in Edmonton that we think should be more prominent. In this case, we’d like to serve up a river valley view with your food, from one of our favourite vantage points in the city.

Most importantly, we have a great line-up of trucks:

We wouldn’t have been able to offer this event on our own – thanks to the Oliver Community League for stepping up and supporting us from the beginning. We know that good partners are hard to find, so we really appreciate their help!

We will be posting the menu next week, so keep your eyes peeled for further details!

Recap: June 27, 2012 Old Strathcona Truck Stop

Our last Truck Stop at McIntyre Park in Old Strathcona was a success! While the crowds on June 27, 2012 may not have been as generous as events in previous weeks, the sun was out, and people were enjoying the opportunity to have a picnic dinner.

Truck Stop in Old Strathcona - June 27

Thanks to the Old Strathcona Business Association and Kathy Stanley, the City’s Vending Coordinator, we were able to host eight Truck Stops in the neighbourhood in May and June. And given the response of people overall, we think it proves that the appetite for food trucks isn’t confined to downtown!

Stay tuned for the announcement of more Truck Stops to take place this summer!

Recap: What the Truck?! @ Al Fresco

We’re a little behind on these recaps, but we’ll start with What the Truck?! @ Al Fresco, which took place on 104 Street on June 9, 2012. This was the first WTT where we partnered with an existing event, and we’d like to think it went pretty well, in spite of the overcast conditions!

What the Truck?!

It was our biggest WTT to date, with ten trucks participating. Diners had a plethora of choices, from roasted pork belly to crack ‘n’ cheese and Cajun halibut sandwiches and steamed barbecue pork buns.

We were also thrilled that Battista’s Calzones debuted their brand new Calzonemobile at the event. They were the first to sell out, too!

The Battista’s crew had a blast

In total, the trucks raised $4000 for the Zebra Child Protection Centre, which was chosen as this year’s Al Fresco charity of choice. Enjoying good food for a good cause – what could be better?

Thanks again to everyone who came out!

The Pulled Pork Throwdown winner is…The Act!

The Act, Nomad, and Smokehouse BBQ battled it out for three hours straight tonight at the Edmonton Public School Board Archives & Museum. They served up delicious pulled pork sliders to hundreds of hungry Edmontonians all evening to fight for the title of pulled pork champion in our first ever Throwdown Edition of Truck Stop. In the end, when the votes were tallied, one truck came away with the title…

Congratulations to The Act!

While The Act walked away with the victory, we heard from voters that they liked different aspects of all three sliders. There were great comments about Nomad’s caraway seed slaw, and some self-proclaimed barbecue experts noted that the bark and smoke rings on Smokehouse BBQ’s pork were indicators of well-prepared meat. In the end, it wasn’t enough to overcome the crunchy onion straws and toasted bun that pushed The Act’s slider into the winning position.

Pulled Pork Throwdown

Of course, tonight’s Throwdown was all in good fun. It was also an opportunity to support the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation. All three trucks have decided to donate a portion of the proceeds from tonight’s event to the Foundation, which when combined with the money raised by donations from voters should result in a healthy contribution to an important cause in our city. We’ll announce the amount raised in the coming days once we have the final numbers.
