This week, we’re happy to introduce you to the second new member of our team, Caleng Cheng!
1. My day job is…
I am currently looking for some opportunities at the moment! In the meantime, I am helping with a new startup based in Waterloo called HomeFed.
2. Why did you decide to get involved in What the Truck?!
Simple, I love food! I love the concept of bringing together various food trucks around Edmonton to one central location for people to enjoy, especially if they don’t work or live near the areas the food trucks operate in. It’s a great way to support local businesses and showcase the talent of local chefs and cooks.
3. What is one of your favourite local food truck item?
Drift‘s pork belly sandwich! That or Bully‘s mac and cheese.
4. What is one type of food truck cuisine you’d like to see served curbside in Edmonton?
It would definitely have to be Asian street food. Ever since visiting Taiwan back in October, I’ve been craving the street food served at the night markets. My favourite was one particular item, literally called “sausage in a sausage”. From afar, it looks like a simple hotdog. In reality, the “bun” is actually sticky rice in a sausage casing that has been split open for the other sausage (beef or pork) to be put in. Some of the toppings include dried pork, pickled cabbage, onions, and radish. Definitely a must-have if anyone travels to Taiwan.
Hong Kong also had a variety of different street food. My favourites were definitely the fish siu mai, grilled squid tentacles, and cold noodles in little bags.
5. What about the food truck scene are you most looking forward to in 2014?
New trucks! It’s always fun to see what new cuisine a food truck has to offer. Or even new menu items from existing trucks. Hopefully our What the Truck?! events will be bigger and better than last year 🙂
