Spring in Edmonton: Bring on the Food Trucks!

Although we can’t seem to rid ourselves of the snow this year, the less than spring-like conditions haven’t deterred Edmonton’s fleet of food trucks from hitting the streets this April!

We know of six trucks already out feeding the hungry hoardes. Four are well-known to the street food savvy:

and two are new to the scene:

Our first Truck Stop event of the season will be taking place in a few weeks (an announcement to follow soon), but until then, get out on the street and get your truck on!

What the Truck?! in 2012

It was a busy year for What the Truck?! in 2012.

We successfully partnered with the Old Strathcona Business Association to expand Truck Stops south of the river. Over eight days in May and June, street food enthusiasts gathered in William McIntyre Park to enjoy picnic-style dinners.

WTT also raised over $5,500 for charity in 2012. In June, What the Truck?! partnered with the 104 Street Al Fresco Block Party, which benefited the Zebra Child Protection Centre. In August, our inaugural Truck Stop: Throwdown Edition featured three trucks battling it out for pulled pork supremacy, all while benefiting the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation.

2012 was also the year of the food truck in Edmonton – not only did Food Network’s wildly popular show Eat St. come to town, but our three What the Truck?! festivals also drew its biggest crowds yet. Whether it was 104 Street in June, Victoria Promenade in August, or Churchill Square in September, Edmontonians showed us that their love for food trucks is bigger than ever!

Shoutouts to the Downtown Edmonton Community League and Northlands for their support of our events in 2012.

Even though the streets are still packed with snow, you can be sure that we’re working on the 2013 What the Truck?! calendar already. We hope you’re ready!

Recap: May 31, 2012 Truck Stop

Two weeks in a row with warm, sunny weather? Awesome! It was another beautiful night down in Old Strathcona this evening for our final Truck Stop in May. Hundreds of Edmontonians once again gathered at McIntyre Park to enjoy our lineup of food trucks. This family even brought their own table!

It was great to see so many families in the park! And they must have come hungry, because the trucks keep selling more and more food. The Act even had to refill the truck a few times (handy to have the restaurant just across the street!).

We may have been in Old Strathcona, but I just couldn’t resist taking a photo of the wonderful “I ❤ YEGDT” aprons that The Act was wearing!

While tonight was our final Truck Stop in May, it won’t be our last of the season. Stay tuned!

Eat Street is coming to Edmonton!

Edmonton’s food truck scene is set to gain even more momentum now that popular Food Network show Eat Street is coming to our city!

Eat Street

Eat Street producer David Freeman sent us this message about the upcoming trip:

“They say an army marches on it’s stomach, well so does a city in my opinion and Edmonton is certainly marching forward with a growing appetite and Eat St. is happy to feed that need by highlighting the biggest and best food trucks around. As a new city to the Eat St. fold, Edmonton has shown us that it’s not who is first to the party, or who has the most trucks per capita, but the quality of those trucks that rise to the surface.

Eat St. will be filming in Edmonton between August 7th and 9th, filming three fantastic trucks: Molly’s Eats, Drift and The Act. Come along to all and help celebrate a taste of your town.”

Here are the details:

  • Tuesday, August 7th: Molly’s Eats @ Sir Winston Churchill Square from 11:00am  – 1:00pm
  • Wednesday, August 8th: Drift @ 107th St. and Jasper Ave. from 11:30am  – 1:30pm
  • Thursday, August 9th: The Act @ Sir Winston Churchill Square from 11:30am -1:30pm

Stick those dates in your calendar now and get out and support Molly’s Eats, Drift, and The Act next week. We’re very excited to welcome Eat Street to Edmonton!
