Recap: What the Truck?! at Victoria Promenade

Friday was sunny and warm here in Edmonton, the perfect day for a stroll down Victoria Promenade while enjoying delicious eats from some of our best food trucks. Thousands of people descended upon our biggest What the Truck?! yet to fill up on tasty food and the amazing view of Edmonton’s river valley.

What the Truck?!

It was probably the most diverse crowd yet! We think the sights and smells helped attract curious residents from the apartments above, and we heard from many other Oliver residents were excited that What the Truck?! was finally making a stop in their neighbourhood. But we think the conditions were perfect for others new to the food truck scene to take advantage of the location and the weather to experience this trend for themselves!

As organizers, we envisioned that an event like this would again help draw attention to what we believe is an underutilized space in the city. So although we admit it was a bit crowded, it really was rewarding to see people turning every corner of the Promenade into their own little picnic spot – from the curbs and railings to apartment stoops.

What the Truck?!

We’ve heard lots of feedback about Friday’s event already – thank you to everyone who has been in touch. We know that some of the lines were long, chaotic, and that some of the trucks ran out of food rather quickly. We always try to learn from our events, and we definitely have some ideas about how we can improve future events.

We do want to emphasize however that long lines and trucks selling out aren’t necessarily all bad! Food trucks do have limited capacity, so they’re going to sell out at some point. And keep in mind that for many of the trucks, there is no restaurant backing them up – everything is being created on-the-spot in the truck. Besides, what fun is a food truck without some anticipation?

What the Truck?!

We couldn’t have done the event without the support of our volunteers and partners. Big thanks to the Oliver Community League, who worked with us right from the start and was a key partner in making the event happen. Thanks also to Tri-Line Disposal who provided us with the excellent red toters for waste so we could keep the promenade tidy.

What the Truck?!

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came! You can see more photos of the event here.

What the Truck?! at Victoria Promenade – Friday, August 3, 2012

We’re very excited for our next big event taking place this Friday evening in Oliver along the beautiful Victoria Promenade! Below you’ll find all of the important details. Please pass this along to your friends, and we’ll see you there!

Victoria Promenade

Date, Time, Location

The event takes place this Friday, August 3, 2012 from 5pm to 9pm. The location is Victoria Promenade, which is technically 100 Avenue. We’ll be located between 121 Street and 119 Street, which gives us a fantastic view of the river valley.

Here’s a map to help you find us:

There is limited street parking in the area, so plan ahead. We’re just a block south of Jasper Avenue though, so there’s lots of bus routes that go by.

Lineup & Menu

We’ve got full menu information online here, so you can plan what you want to try ahead of time. The lineup includes: The Act, Battista’s Calzones, Carnival Cravings, Drift, Eva Sweet, Filistix, The Lingnan, Molly’s Eats, Nomad, and Smokehouse BBQ.

Partners & Sponsors

We couldn’t have done this event without the enthusiastic support of the Oliver Community League, so big thanks to them! They’re hosting a Community Social following What the Truck?! at the Oliver Community Hall. You can find all the details here.

We’re very excited to once again have the Urban Monks DJs providing some beats for us during the event! Make sure you stop by and say hi to Thomas and Marc!

At our last event in conjunction with Al Fresco, we had Tri-Line Disposal sponsor us by providing toter bins for waste. We’re very lucky to have them back as a sponsor again this time! Leaving the area as clean or cleaner than when we found it is very important to us, and it becomes a much easier job with Tri-Line’s help.

Spread the word!

Come hungry on Friday and be sure to tell your family, friends, and colleagues too! We have ten trucks this time – let’s show them how much Edmonton loves mobile food! Our Facebook event is here.

We had some exciting news this week with the announcement that Eat St. is coming to town, and we’ll have some other announcements on Friday too. Don’t miss it!
