After the crowds we saw in May, we decided that it would be only fitting to expand our road closure and make this our largest event to date – we’ll share which 35 trucks will be joining us and what tasty dishes they’ll be serving up in the coming weeks!

If you want to win a pair of Golden Tickets to this event (where you and a friend can come early, skip the lines, and order from as many trucks as you like), your last chance to enter will be this Saturday, August 22 at Telus Field – be there or be square!

Wrap-Up: July 11, 2015 Northlands Park After Dark

It’s been a few weeks, but we still want to give a big thank you to everyone who came out to Northlands Park for What the Truck?!

What the Truck?! brought the party north of downtown to Northlands Park, right next to the Northlands Casino adjacent to the Horses for a beautiful Friday night on the patio. With an available bar and the excitement of Park After Dark running on the track behind us, it was an amazing new experience that was exciting for both the trucks as well as attendees!

With 15 trucks on site, attendees feasted on everything from cheeseburgers to chimichangas to Jamaican Patties at what was one of our favourite events to date! Pictured above is the Big Mock from The Hop (cut in half so that we could share!), who made their big What the Truck?! debut alongside four other newbies – Northlands’ own 1879 Where Flavour Begins, the flakey goodness of Meat Street Pies, schnitzel-slingin’ Sculpt Foods, and generous portions from Soner’s Donair & Kebab.

We were joined onsite by the folks from Edmonton Tourism and local food blogger Linda Hoang, who shot an awesome video about what it’s like to be at What the Truck?!. You can check out the video here.

After receiving feedback from attendees at our May and June events, we tested out a new ticket system with the trucks. Our goal is to reduce wait times where possible, and to help the trucks better communicate food inventory to attendees so avoid disappointment that comes with waiting in line only to find your items sold out. While this event was not as busy as our kickoff event in Churchill Square, attendees seemed happier with the lineups (or lack thereof!) and many attendees that we chatted with told us that they were able to visit more trucks this time around than at previous events.

We were happy to see attendees pleased with the outcome for a first run, but there is always room for improvement and we can’t wait to test out a few new tweaks and another new truck lineup at our next event at Telus Field on August 22nd!

As always, we could not run these events without our tireless volunteers who help us keep the event site clean. We received huge thanks from the folks at Northlands, and we echo their sentiment – you guys rock!
Last, but definitely not least – a LARGE thank you goes to our major sponsor – Northlands Park! From free parking to loads of seating onsite, the Northlands team helped this to be one of our best events to date.

Haven’t been to a What the Truck?! event before?

Here are our tried-and-trusted Tips & Tricks as well as our Frequently Asked Questions. If you have any other questions while you’re at the event, you can always tweet us at @whatthetruckyeg or find one of our team members in a yellow What the Truck?! jackets.

This event will be our first trying out a new ticket system for ordering entree menu items at each truck. We appreciate the feedback that we received from previous events, and this system was devised to help improve line management and communication about food quantity available at each truck so that you can make it to multiple trucks. With it being our first attempt, we warmly welcome feedback! Which leads us to…

We will be continuing our contest for Golden Tickets for our September wrap-up event, and you’ll be able to fill out event feedback forms at our Information Tent onsite, as well as by tagging us in your photos on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #whatthetruck! We’d love to see what you’re eating.

Venue Information

There will be alcohol available for purchase at bars outside that are operate by Northlands staff. The entire event grounds are all-ages, but we will also have seating on both sides of a short fence if you do not feel comfortable sitting in the same area as the alcohol (which must be kept within the fenced area).

We will have picnic tables as well as patio seating set up outside. There is also some seating inside the Northlands Casino building if you wish to go inside. Bathrooms will also be located inside the building, and ATMs are available both inside and outside.

Edited to add (7/7): Unfortunately, this is one event that cannot accommodate four-legged friends because there are horses on the track, and we have to consider everyone’s safety with these large animals (especially the people who are handling them). Any dogs will not be allowed onto the event grounds. However, you could grab your food and head on over to enjoy it in Borden Park across the street!

Other Activities

The Park After Dark races will begin around 6:30PM, and the folks Northlands Park have also graciously set up a Kids Zone area with some activities for little ones.

Wear your best hat and you could win a prize package featuring four VIP Infield tickets to the Canadian Derby!

Transportation & Parking

Parking at Northlands is FREE for this event, and with plenty of space at their adjacent lots, as well as in the area around Borden Park, there will be plenty of room for everyone.

Since there will be alcohol present at the event, everyone at What the Truck?! would like everyone to get home safely! If you have been drinking, we urge you to consider alternative transportation home. We will be tying flag tape to lead the way between the Coliseum LRT station and Northlands Park.

We’re excited to announce that Uber, the app that connects you with a private driver at the tap of a button, will be offering new users their first ride free, up to $20 to or from What The Truck.
