Meet the Trucks: Sculpt Foods

In this week’s Meet the Truck series, we are featuring Sculpt Foods – a new truck serving up German comfort food.

Darin – Sculpt Foods

Why did you start a food truck?
Food has always been one of my (our) passions. I jumped off the corporate ladder to pursue something that I’ve always wanted to do, cook good food. To open a food truck was the perfect opportunity for me personal because it is seasonal, work the summer and R&R fall and winter. I look forward to bringing new flavours to our city streets.

What kind of food do you serve?
Our street food will be primarily German. Our catering menu will be all over the board from Burgers and Dogs to fine dining.

Who can we see on the truck?
I’m glad to say that I will have my family by my side in 2015. I’m Darin and with me will be my wife Carmen and my three daughters Natasha, Naomi and Abigail.

Where will you be serving?
My vending location for now will be at the North East corner of 108st and 99ave.

What makes your truck unique?
I think the selection of German favorites will bring something new and exciting to our fine city.

What is your favourite item from a food truck that is not your own?
We spend a lot of time in Mexico, so I would have to say tacos from Casa12Doce

Country that inspires you the most (related to food)?
This is a tough one, so I will list two: Mexico and Japanese.

What do you hope to see or get out of the 2015 season?
It would be a successful first season for Sculpt Foods if we were accepted in the food truck culture and to bring smiles of satisfaction to my customers.

Meet the Trucks: Dolce & Banana

This week we are featuring a truck that is familiar to some of you, and known for their delicious Italian treats. Meet Dolce & Banana!

Why did you start a food truck?
I remember attending my first WTT event a few years ago and thought to my self, “this is so cool. I can do this.” I have always worked in the restaurant industry and have been a vendor at farmers’ markets for over ten years now. I like to challenge myself and believe in surrounding myself with people who are more talented than me when it comes to food. This is why I work at Ernest’s dining room at NAIT during the off season. It is safe to say that I am always around food.

What kind of food do you serve?
I specialize in Italian food, such as grilled panini, fresh homemade pasta, pizza, traditional Italian pastries and dessert, homemade Italian sodas, specialty coffees.

Who can we see on the truck?
Myself, my sister Luisa (NAIT culinary instructor), my niece Isabella, my friends from Italy, Giulia and Federico, and sometimes my mom.

Where will you be serving?
Various farmers’ markets in and around Edmonton during the week and weekend, downtown, university area, private catering, festivals and events.

What makes your truck unique?
My logo is an old family portrait.

What is your favourite item from a food truck that is not your own?
I am a big fan of Theo’s food truck Little Village.

If you had to fuse to completely different cuisines together, what would they be?
Japan and Korea.

What do you hope to see or get out of the 2015 season?
My goal is to take you on a culinary journey throughout Italy.

Meet the Trucks: Spice Rickshaw

Continuing with our Meet the Truck series, this week we are featuring a new Indian truck – Spice Rickshaw! You may have had the opportunity to try their delicious Indian food at our first even in May.

Why did you start a food truck?
We are a farmers’ market vendor selling frozen food. We are a permanent feature at most farmers’ markets around Edmonton area selling frozen Indian and Thai food. We have been inundated with requests from our lovely customers who want to enjoy our food warm and piping hot. After 3 years of doing farmers’ markets, we decided to take the plunge into serving hot food and filling the peoples’ appetite for tasty and delicious Indian street food.

What kind of food do you serve?
Indian street food: Not limited to Pao bhaji, Kabab parathas, chaat (also called Indian nachos by certain members of my family).

Who can we see on the truck?
Main person will be Renu, she is the big boss, food gourmand and the matriarch. She will most likely be accompanied by Connor, he recently named himself the Creator as he built Spice Rickshaw from ground up. We will also have our lovely support staff helping along the way.

Where will you be serving?
We are a brand new truck, we are hoping to stick to our roots and be found primarily at different farmers’ markets around Edmonton and different festivals as well.

What makes your truck unique?
Our whole team loves food, love to eat different foods, love to share food. In Indian culture, food is how people share love. We love to incorporate delicious Alberta ingredients with our creativity and tradition to bring memorable meals to peoples’ plates.

What is your favourite item from a food truck that is not your own?
Breakfast paninos from Dolce and Banana. We love to devour their Paninos every Saturday morning at the City Market. In our books, Ernesto’s paninos = perfect Saturday morning.

If you had to fuse to completely different cuisines together, what would they be?
Ukrainian and Indian: nothing tastes better than fluffy potatoes perishkes with butter chicken.

What do you hope to see or get out of the 2015 season?
At the WTT events, our goal is to introduce the complex flavours of Indian street to the Edmonton food scene. Indian food that is currently available in Edmonton is very monotone and just from one province from Indian, we hope to familiarize Edmontonians to delicious flavours that exist outside the realm of “curries”.

Meet the Trucks: The Hop

We hope you’re excited for What the Truck?! this Saturday at Churchill Square! We continue our Meet the Trucks series with a truck that serves in the Leduc area – The Hop.

Why did you start a food truck?
Food trucks are fun and totally different from traditional restaurants. We started The Hop because we wanted to have fun at work as because we are different.

What kind of food do you serve?
Burgers, Fries, Shakes and some tasty frozen treats.

Who can we see on the truck?
Sean, Megan, some friends and family who help out when required.

Where will you be serving?
Mostly in Leduc but we are expanding our horizons.

What makes your truck unique?
We are the only truck, as far as I know, that has fused the fifties with a food truck. At The Hop you’ll hear oldies music, you’ll eat old style burgers and drink old style shakes. The fries are alright too.

Country that inspires you the most (related to food)?
English and French.

What do you hope to see or get out of the 2015 season?
To have more fun than we did last year and to be different from other food establishments in Edmonton.
