Recap: What the Truck?! in Old Strathcona

The weather was touch and go for a while there, but when all was said and done, our first What the Truck?! of the season was blessed with sunny skies and not a drop of rain!

What the Truck?! in Old Strathcona

Given it rained in the hours leading up to the event, we weren’t sure what that would mean for crowds. But we should have had faith in the city’s food truck fans, who still turned out in droves to sample dishes from twelve different trucks.

From vegan BLTs to mapo tofu and ahi tuna tortilla rolls, the vendors offered an incredible variety. Most of them sold out, thanks to the hungry festivalgoers!

Although we strive to make all of our events family-friendly, this one seemed to attract even more young attendees. It was wonderful seeing children dancing, playing with one another, and having free run of McIntyre Park throughout the evening.

The Edmonton Public Library was on-site distributing free library memberships. They gave out a record 107 cards in four hours!

The atmosphere no doubt wouldn’t have been the same without the great tunes by DJs Thomas Scott (Urban Monks), Rob Clarke and Polyesterday. Thanks for sponsoring our event!

A huge thank you to our partner the Old Strathcona Business Association. Without them, the event could not have happened. This neighbourhood is already a destination for dining, shopping, arts and nightlife, so their support means even more.

We would also like to acknowledge the Strathcona Community League, who also stepped up as a sponsor.

Lastly, thank you to Donna, Francina, Jessica and Susan – the volunteers who helped make this a stress-free event for us! Many hands make light work, and this was not more true that night – you helped make the lines congruent, site spotless, and were game for anything we asked of you.

We are in the process of planning several more events for this summer, so we’d like to take this opportunity to ask you for some feedback. We would appreciate it if you could fill out this survey about your experience.

What the Truck?! in Churchill Square is tomorrow!

Aren’t you just loving this weather? We sure are! Tomorrow looks like it’ll be the perfect evening to enjoy some of the best street food Edmonton has to offer. We hope you’ll join us in Churchill Square from 5pm to 9pm to indulge in this amazing menu!

The Square
Nightfall comes earlier these days…stay shortly after the event to see the Square all lit up!

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank a few folks for their help in making tomorrow’s event happen. Of course the City has always been a good partner, and they’ve been very helpful this time around as expected. We also want to thank DECL for once again sponsoring us and lending their support! As you know we like to keep our venues tidy, so we have one again engaged Tri-Line Disposal to provide us with some equipment for that.

We also want to give a big shout out to a new partner – Northlands! They’ve stepped up to help us with line control and are providing stanchions for our use. Follow them on Twitter at @Northlands and thank them when your line is clearly marked tomorrow!

Last but not least we want to give a plug to DJ’s Raebot and wijit who will be spinning tunes for us all evening long. We’re glad to have them on board!

If you’re at all interested in volunteering for the event – setup, cleanup – please let us know by sending Mack an email.

Churchill Square
Imagine this…but full of food trucks and people!

We hope to see you down on the square tomorrow!

Truck Stop: Throwdown Edition on August 15, 2012

One of the things you may not know about our What the Truck?! events is that we seek to minimize menu duplication. We know food festivals such as this one are better when people have more variety and options, so we ask trucks to submit their menus in advance, and ask that similar items be changed or dropped.

But recently, we were thinking – why couldn’t we use this duplication to our advantage? Why not throw a bit of friendly competition into the mix? And with that, Truck Stop: Throwdown Edition was born.

Pulled Pork Throwdown

Join us on August 15, 2012 for a pulled pork throwdown, where The Act, Nomad and Smokehouse BBQ will be putting their best sandwiches forward in the hopes of winning your vote!

What: Truck Stop: Throwdown Edition
When: Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Where: Edmonton Public Schools Archives (10425 99 Avenue)
Time: 5-8pm

The three trucks will be serving up slider-sized portions of their pulled pork, so you’ll have enough room to consider all three if you so choose!

To vote, we ask that you donate at least $2 to the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation in exchange for a ballot. Given the location of this event, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to partner with a charity with a great cause – learn more about how the Foundation supports early learning and full-day kindergarten here.

Stay tuned for more details this week on what else you can expect at Truck Stop!
